The highlight of my recent sales conference came when a colleague spoke about his journey to success. It wasn’t his successes that mattered so much, it was the failures he encountered along the way. Now in his late fifties, this man had been through a lot…leaving his original career in auto body with his brother to venture into sales. And then failing to make enough to pay his bills and crying on the phone to his brother, asking to borrow money. Then he managed to find success anew to become the top automobile sales rep for several years.

After his relationship with his boss soured he resigned and began a new roller coaster ride selling residential solar. He started making new sales quickly, only to see them cancel one by one. After a pep talk from our sales director he then clawed back to make new sales and seeing them through to completion.

Without even knowing it, this career sales representative used an effective story arch to pour his heart out to us. He was simply telling us his life story in the most direct way he knew how. Even without a polished public speaking presence, he was extremely effective and engaging.

Imagine how much more powerful his story and delivery could be if he understood how to weave a storytelling model into his speech!
