If spending time with family for the holidays means sharing some laughs, you might have plenty of material to build stories amusing to people beyond just your family! Did uncle Louis have an embarrassing moment that’s funny every time he talks about it? Did cousin Al experience a day like no other?
My family loves to remember times they’ve embarrassed me or when I made them laugh till they couldn’t breath. Like any good story, humorous tales tend to have conflict which escalates in hilarious ways.
Take for example, the one night I spent in Athens, Greece with two of my favorite cousins. I had just graduated from college and we all met in northern Scotland to then fly to the Mediterranean.
Athens was hot, very hot in the summer! I was the only guy in our trio and due to no AC in our hotel we slept almost naked. This was the only night I can remember in my life that was completely absent of any breeze. Like three spoiled American children, we drifted down to the lobby to complain of the heat. The hotel clerk’s response…”you are in Athens.” Dejected and exhausted, we sauntered back to our room to die.
My companions love to tell the story of how later that night I awoke the two ladies to announce a strange rustling sound. They turned on the light to reveal the largest roach the world has ever seen, crawling on a plastic bag. Their male cousin (that’s me) didn’t have the cojones to kill the damn thing so one of them had to use her shoe! The next day I lost the two girls while sightseeing. It turns out they had been trying to evade a dog who had begun terrorizing them. The rest of the story centers around the three of us nursing each other’s sun burns courtesy of the Greek islands summer.
While retelling this story through tears of laughter at family gatherings my uncle would always reply sarcastically, “Isn’t international travel glamorous!”
Can you recall favorite family miss adventures? Perhaps you can craft them into sensational stories for a family gathering or a Toastmasters speech!
